Catalogue Note

On the reverse of each painting, a label reads: A picture by a mature Chinese artist painted on glass, which was over four hundred years old in 1880, brought from Canton, China, in 1860, and presented to Col. T. Crawford MacDowell by James Olds of Honolulu, Sandwich Island, 1880.

A passenger record regarding Col. T. Crawford MacDowell is published in Samuel C. Damon’s monthly journal The Friend (New Series, Vol. 27, No. 12; Old Series, Vol. 35), December 2nd, 1878, p. 97, which notes MacDowell’s departure from the Port of Honolulu, S. I, for San Francisco, per Zealandia on October 28, 1878.
