Condition

Overall fine condition. The back panel is unpainted. An old age split to the top shows some glue residue, mostly to the interior of the lid. There is 4-inch wide by 1-inch high patch along the lower edge at the center of the proper right side that has been painted to match the decoration overall. Examination under UV shows the aforementioned patch, as well as a dark spot on the proper left side of the case consistent with a knot in the wood.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Catalogue Note

The beautiful hand painted decoration on this box relates to several other surviving boxes and hand painted walls identified by Nina Fletcher Little as the “Brush Stroke Decorator.”  A wall from a home in Sunderland, Massachusetts is in the collection of Historic New England painted by the same hand (acc. nos. 1991.332 and 1992.643) For additional information see Ruth Wolfe, “Nina Fletcher Little: Bridging the Worlds of Antiques and Folk Art,” American Folk Art, 22:2 (Summer 1997), 34-5).
