MARTIN VAN BUREN PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES ·A ·D·1837, bust of van Buren right; below truncation, FURST.F., rev., PEACE | AND | FRIENDSHIP, clasped hands below crossed tomahawk and peace pipe, 51.0 mm (Julian IP-19; Prucha 44; Belden 34; COAC 1997, p. 42, US-12), pierced for suspension, with some scattered marks, but better than very fine

Catalogue Note

Furst, for his customary $1,000 for three obverse dies, had the preliminary work on the middle die finished by May, 1837. The first groups of fifty of each size were received in Washington by the end of October.
