The Rolex GMT Master was originally introduced in 1954. With this release, two time-zones could be read at the same time, which proved to be very useful for pilots, particularly those working for Pan- Am and NASA. In 1988 Rolex then released the GMT-Master II, which increased the functionality by giving its wearer the possibility to adjust the watch to read up to three different time-zones at one glance. This particular reference was introduced in 1989 and stayed in production until 2007. During its production life-cycle the reference 16710 underwent several changes including the switch from a tritium dial to a Super Luminova dial, which is also present on this watch.
