Condition

This work is in original unlined condition. The picture surface has been covered in a heavy varnish that has discolored over time. Finely patterned, stable craquelure is visible on the mother's face, shirt and apron and in the fireplace at upper left. There is a small area of thinness above the chick at lower left and minor frame abrasion in the fireplace along the left edge. Under UV: the old varnish fluoresces green across the entire picture surface, though minor, vertical lines of inpainting are visible on the mother's face and chest, the chair, and in the fireplace at upper left. Additional pinpoint dots of retouching are visible in the area of thinness above the chick and in a few widely scattered areas of the foreground and background.
