Condition

Lined. The picture surface presents well overall, aside from a web of widely patterned craquelure, evident especially in the upper half of the work. Under UV: there are scattered areas of retouching visible in the door at left and dots and dashes throughout the painting at upper right. Additional, lightly applied retouching to the young girl's face and the older woman's face and costume. Small scattered dots and dashes of retouching visible scattered throughout the work. When offered in 1989, the work had a label attached to the reverse, reading: Sept? 1st 1841 / Very Many thanks my dear Mr Langford / for the Draft you have just / sent me for £50 the price / of your Picture of Portraits of yourself Mr Langford & / Mifs / Believe me always / my dear Mr Langford / your oblig / James Holland / To Edward W Langford. Esq,
