Description

  • German School, 18th Century
  • A troop of cavalry led by two mounted trumpeters and a mounted drummer
  • oil on canvas
  • 43 by 30 3/4  in.; 109.2 by 78.1 cm.

Condition

The canvas appears to be unlined and is stable on its stretcher. The paint surface overall is stable beneath an old yellowed varnish with faint stretcher bar marks visible at all edges. There are two small losses to the background upper right. Inspection under UV reveals some scattered retouching here and there, some minor strengthening to the dark horse at center, some older areas of repaint in the upper edge at right and a fine diagonal crack of approximately 1.5 in. in the rock upper right with retouching. Many of these retouches have since discolored and are visible to the naked eye. The painting would benefit from a light clean and the discolored retouches could be revisited. Offered in a decoratively carved gilt wood frame.
