Description

  • Follower of Jean-Honoré Fragonard
  • "The useless resistance"
  • oil on panel
  • 5 3/4  by 7 5/8  in.; 14.6 by 19.4 cm.

Condition

The panel is uncradled and stable with a horizontal bow. A delicate image reads well, though there is some thinness to the paint, as is expected from a sketch. Some minor scratches are throughout the surface. Inspection under UV shows some areas of retouches on the bottom left quadrant, upper left corner, and on the lower right edge. Some minor spots are on the face of the lady, the hair of the man, and on the upper right corner. The painting is offered in a gilded wood frame with some scratches.

Catalogue Note

This painting relates to a composition by Fragonard in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm (inv. no. NM 5415). Given its compact size and loose brush strokes, this painting could have very well served as a modello, or sketch.
