Description

  • Portrait of a seated man, unfinished
  • oil on canvas, laid down on board
  • 12 3/8  by 7 1/2  in.; 31.6 by 19 cm.

Provenance

Acquired by the mother of the current owner in 1936, Paris;
Thence by descent.

Condition

The canvas is laid on board. Overall some light craquelure is visible, but the painting is stable. The image presents well underneath an old, discolored varnish. Inspection under UV reveal some lines of inpainting to address the craquelure, which seem to be primarily concentrated towards the edges. Other few lines of retouching are in the shadows of the figure and in the costume at center. The painting is offered in a carved, gilded wood frame.
