Description

  • After Pieter Gerritsz. van Roestraten
  • Portrait of a cobbler, full length, in his workshop
  • oil on canvas
  • 36 x 31 inches
  • 91.4 x 78.7 cm

Provenance

Emile Wolf, New York;
Thence by descent to the present owners.

Condition

Canvas is lined. The figure in the foreground reads well, though the details in the background have faded and are more difficult to read, especially in the darker colors. There is some scuffing along the edges, and a small spot of pigment lost on the bottom left quadrant though these are not too distracting. Inspection under UV is impeded due to a milky varnish, though there appears to be some scattered spots of retouching to the background, especially on the curtain at right. The painting is offered in an elaborately carved, gilded frame.
