Description

  • Susanna and the elders
  • oil on canvas, unframed
  • 42 1/4  by 36 1/2  in.; 107.3 by 92.7 cm.

Condition

The canvas has an old glue relining, and is slightly loose on its stretcher, causing mild buckling in the upper corners. The paint surface is a little dirty beneath an old varnish, but the details remain crisp and clear. Susanna's tears, for example, are still beautifully preserved, as is the silk robe in her hand. There are losses scattered here an there throughout, as visible in the catalogue image, including some large losses to the lower edge, one in Susanna's right elbow, and one to her temple. These losses could be filled and retouched. There are three small filled repaired punctures in the background at upper center. Inspection under UV confirms what is visible to the naked eye and in the catalogue image.
