Description

  • Bartholomeus Molenaer
  • An interior scene with a group of peasants gathered
  • bears signature lower right: Izack van Ostade
  • oil on panel, unframed
  • 14 3/8  by 12 1/4 in.; 36.5 x 12.1 cm.

Condition

The panel is comprised of one flat, stable board that is uncradled. Overall the image reads well underneath a yellow varnish. There are a few scattered losses in the background, primarily at right. A possible old repaired crack is visible at upper right in the ceiling. There is some minor abrasion scattered along the edges most likely due to old frame rubbing. Inspection under UV reveals a few scattered spots of retouching here and there, some of which have slightly discolored and are visible to the naked eye as with the aforementioned small losses. Another area of retouching is visible in the wall by the broomstick to the right of the group of figures. There are two spots of inconsistency to the varnish: one at lower right on the jug, and another on the upper right at the corner. This work is offered unframed.
