Description

  • Portrait of a bearded man, bust length, wearing a red hat
  • oil on panel, unframed
  • 18 by 14 in.; 45.7 by 35.6 cm.

Condition

Panel is flat, cradled, and bevelled on all four edges. The figure reads handsomely with some details preserved, for example on the fur and white collar. On the white collar there is a tiny thin scratch at right. A few thin cracks or joins run vertically, with the longest across the sitter's face and shirt, with shorter ones on the center of the shirt. A concentrated area with scattered small grains of about 2 in. are on the left side. These fluoresce under UV because they have probably been retouched and have some faint and stable associated craquelure. There appears to be some small spots of retouches scattered along the edges, background, and on the center of the gown. Painting is offered unframed, though otherwise could hang in its present state.
