Anonymous sale, New York, Sotheby's, 5 June 2014, lot 115;
There acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The canvas is laid on board. Underneath an old, dirty varnish appears a handsome image with some details well preserved in the delicate details of his cloak. Old stretcher bar marks a faintly visibly along edges. There appears to be a small area of repair beneath figure's face. Some minor scuffing is barely visible along the edges. Inspection under UV reveals some scattered retouching to address some small old repair tear, like for example in the upper left quadrant, in his thigh at lower left, in his cheek, and with a more pronounced area through the figure's arm at right. There are some spots of retouching scattered here and there throughout the composition, concentrated particularly in the dark shadows, for example on the figure's face. Offered in a carved gilded frame.
