Description

The partially articulated bangle applied with black enamel with a design of a flowering vine, set with variously shaped rubies and sapphires and cushion-shaped and rose diamonds, inscribed 'To Marie-Louise from F.W.L.B., March 22nd 1930', inner circumference approximately 170mm, French assay and maker's marks.

Provenance

Formerly in the collection of the artist Marie-Louise Roosevelt Pierrepont, Countess Manvers (1889-1984), received as a gift from her father, Sir Frederick William Louis Butterfield (1858-1943), of Cliffe Castle in Keighly, West Yorkshire, and thence by descent.

Condition

Clasp tongue stamped with French assay marks for 18 carat gold and maker's mark LM with duck, possibly for Maeght, 26 pl. du Marché St Honoré, Paris. Rubies deep pinkish-red, sapphires mid blue to violet, transparent, with typical inclusions visible to the naked eye, some surface-reaching, some areas of minor chipping and wear to facet edges. Stones in closed-back settings. Diamonds bright and lively. Links well-articulated, clasp secure, later safety chain. Enamel in good condition. Scratches to surfaces consistent with age and wear, some areas of discolouration to metal finish and around settings consistent with age. Width of bangle approximately 22mm, gross weight approximately 83.1 grams. Case stamped Asprey.
