OPAL CAMEO BROOCH, ATTRIBUTED TO WILHELM SCHMIDT, LATE 19TH CENTURY

Description

Collet-set with an oval cameo in carved opal depicting a bearded man wearing a turban, to a mount engraved with scroll designs, unsigned.

Condition

Opal varying between brown opaque matrix, and areas with play of colour. Play of colour including green, purple and blue, with smaller flashes of pink and red. Carving mostly in good condition, with some areas of minor wear, one larger chip to lower edge of opal. Setting unmarked, with scratches to metal consistent with wear, brooch fitting closing securely. Opal measuring approximately 19 x 14mm, including mounting approximately 37 x 22mm. Gross weight approximately 5.1 grams. Light scratches to surfaces consistent with wear. Overall in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Wilhelm Schmidt (1845-1938) was a talented stone engraver, particularly noted for his work in carved opal. In the late 1860s, Schmidt moved to London, where he established a gem-carving business in Hatton Garden with his brother Louis, supplying intaglios and cameos for many important jewellers including John Brogden, Guiliano and Child & Child, as well as Tiffany & Co in America.
