PAIR OF CARNELIAN CAMEO EARRINGS, FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY AND LATER

Description

The cameos depicting Hercules/Omphale and Medusa respectively, one possibly signed Michelini to reverse, the other unsigned, each set within an Etruscan revival-style border, hook fittings, French import assay marks.

Condition

Reverse of one cameo with indistinct incised signature, possibly Michelini. Sardonyx orange to cream, translucent to opaque, with typical mottling and banding visible. One claw of Nemean lion skin on Omphale chipped. Cameos approximately 18 x 13mm each, overall length of earrings approximately 35mm. Light scratches to surfaces consistent with wear. Gross weight approximately 10 grams.

Catalogue Note

The indistinct signature to the reverse of one of the Hercules/Omphale cameo possibly refers to Luigi Michelini (active c.1810-1852), a pupil of the Italian gem carver Giuseppe Girometti, who worked in Paris.
