  • Autograph letter signed to Gamaliel Bradford regarding the Bank Charter Act 
2 pages (4 3/4 x in.; 112 x mm) on paper, single sheet folded, written in black ink. Avignon. 25 December 1865, signed ("J.S. Mill"). 

Catalogue Note

"Dear Sir," Mill begins.  "I owe you my thanks for taking the trouble to write and read to me your view of the Bank Charter Act." Gamaliel Bradford that the letter is addressed to was most likely a Boston banker, who helped organize the American Anti-Imperialist League. Mill continues: "I do not find in your letter anything but what I am confident I could answer: much of it I have answered by anticipation, at least in a general way."
