Catalogue Note

RARE. This is the first American edition of the stage version of the 1867 Christmas number of All the Year Round. According to Eckel, "when the story was being written, the possibilities of a stage production constantly were kept in view. The four acts of the narrative were extended to five in the drama, and the stage incidents were somewhat altered and were unlike those in the story". The first English edition was a privately printed one bearing the date 1867.
