Catalogue Note

Polish-born Julian Stanczak studied under Josef Albers and Conrad Marca-Relli at Yale in the 1950s, fusing both teachers’ fascination with color and shape to create his own unique optical aesthetic. ‘Constant Return #1’ is a testament to his talent, as this was one of his early, freehand works before the artist began taping out lines in his paintings.
