Catalogue Note

Theodoros Stamos worked alongside other acclaimed artists like Mark Rothko, using color layering techniques that would lead into the Color Field movement. Stamos loved to travel and as a student of the Hellenistic world, his paintings often reference elements from ancient Greek history and culture. The present work follows Stamos’ stylistic uses of natural imagery and rhythmic colors, creating what appears to be a sunset of slowly shifting squares.
