Catalogue Note

Born in Montreal, Dorothea Rockburne travelled to the United States in the early 1950s to study at Black Mountain College.  Under the guidance of teachers including John Cage and Max Dehn, Rockburne developed a mathematically-based conceptual practice that explored introducing unconventional materials to folded or torn paper.  This body of work is the focus of the long-term exhibition 'Dorothea Rockburne,' currently on view at Dia, Beacon.
