Condition

This work is in good condition overall. The sheet is fully adhered to the artist's mat. The lower right corner of the sheet is slightly lifting. There are scattered pinpoint accretions, primarily along the bottom edge, visible upon close inspection. There is time staining to the mat and water marks to the upper and lower right corners. There is scattered wear and pigment loss to the artist's chosen frame, which does not detract from the work and may be inherent to the age and nature of the object. Framed under glass.

Catalogue Note

“Somehow this snapshot just spoke to me. It dawned on me to paint over this found little photograph, leaving the two women alone in black and white. I knew that my buddy would enjoy this, being of the same sensibility. I was an advertising art director at the time doing serious photography on the side. Collecting snapshots went along with collecting postcards that were the inspirations for my first paintings. What drew me to them was that they were like miniature paintings that captured a specific time and place, a recording of a time that would inevitably pass. I would want to be a social anthropologist if I wasn’t an artist.” -John Baeder, 2018
