Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is a faint surface layer of dust throughout and handling marks to the white painted passages, which fluoresce under Ultraviolet light inspection. There is cracking throughout, primarily to the upper quarter of the canvas, inherent to having been stored rolled. There are scattered linear abrasions, primarily to the edges of the canvas. Under Ultraviolet light inspection there is no evidence of restoration. Unframed.

Catalogue Note

Richard Hambleton emerged as part of the 80s New York downtown scene alongside fellow street artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. The artist is most well-known for his 'Shadowman' series – figures in various modes of action that he painted on walls and buildings throughout the city as well as on paper and canvas. The present lot encapsulates the 'Shadowman' aesthetic that the artist returned to later in his career, before passing away in 2017. Hambleton’s works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, among others.
