Catalogue Note
"In taking the Statue of Liberty as subject, Vo appropriated the definitive symbol of not just America but of the abstract notion of 'freedom' itself, and the specific creed of capitalist democracy associated with the work in that context... Dismantling state myths of omnipotence and permanence, his portrait of Liberty ruptured accrues new poignancy by the day, as an expression of the violent division and erosion of civil liberties that mark our times." Katherine Brinson, "Little or Nothing but Life," in Exh. Cat., New York, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (and traveling), Danh Vo: Take my Breath Away, 2018, p. 42
