Catalogue Note

"Richter has always defined and catalogued the Strips as 'paintings.' His definition begs the question of what it means to call something with no paint a 'painting.' Maybe this nomination suggests a kind of resignation about the fate of painting in a digital world: the hand of the artist is now as redundant as any facility a painter might have had as a colorist."
