Catalogue Note

"In his etchings and pure lithographs, Twombly brought to bear all the experience he collected in his grey paintings of 1967 to 1971, of the imagination of space as dimension and distance...In the lithographs executed in Robert Rauschenberg's studio in 1971, Twombly again returns to a motif derived from Leonardo's Deluge drawings, poetic evocations of cataclysms and the end of the world. This motif, too, often serves Twombly as a point of departure for an expansion of space, in his paintings and drawings alike. But here, instead of picturing terrifying eruptions of masses of rock he has sensitized us to a landscape of last echoes. A threatening atmosphere lies upon the earth like the merciless light of a dramatic event."
