New York, Allan Stone Gallery, Wayne Thiebaud: Recent Works, November - December 1973
"Characteristic of Thiebaud's realism is an underlying abstract structure. It is this deceptively simple sub-surface architecture which exposes his subjects in an almost naked isolation... This apparent simplification of design reveals the artist's intense drive to get to the fundamental nature or essence of things. The result is an extreme confrontation with objectivity." Donald J. Brewer in Exh. Cat., Phoenix Art Museum (and travelling), Wayne Thiebaud Survey 1947-1976, 1976, p. p. 8
