Catalogue Note

“He also constructs images that are photographs in relief. Metaphorically speaking, his process links up with the definition of the hologram: a three-dimensional image suspended in midair. Baldessari creates “transfer images,” interferences, revealed by color and cutting. He invents a poetics whose grammar connects with a way of thinking about the world, rid of all belief. The world is thus rooted in a history that is no longer to be believed but conceived.” Marie de Brugerolle, “Holy Holograms From Hollywood: John Baldessari’s Dialectic Imagery,” in Exh. Cat., Los Angeles County Museum of Art (and traveling), John Baldessari: Pure Beauty, October 2009 - January 2011, p. 313

This work will be included in the forthcoming Volume 5 of the John Baldessari Catalogue Raisonné.
