Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the innermost square is slightly deeper in the original. Condition: This work is in very good condition. Very close inspection reveals some light surface dirt to the extreme white border. All surface inconsistencies are likely to be original. Examination under ultra violet light reveals some tiny specks that fluoresce darkly, which appear to be inpainting.

Catalogue Note

"Homage to the Square began with paintings of the facades of houses in Mexico, in which the windows, doors and corners are outlined by bands of colour. Nearby in Mexico, near Ciudad Chihuahua, there is a town named Aldama, in which the facades of the houses along the main street along a canal beneath cottonwoods are painted in bright colours." Donald Judd: Josef Albers, Cologne 1991, p. 24.

This work will be included in the Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings by Josef Albers currently being prepared by the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, and is registered under 1961.1.29.
