FLEMISH SCHOOL, SECOND HALF OF THE 16TH CENTURY | Venus and Cupid, together with a satyr and a woman playing the harp

Estimate
7,000 - 10,000 GBP
bidding is closed

Description

  • Venus and Cupid, together with a satyr and a woman playing the harp
  • oil on canvas, transferred from panel, with a red wax collector's seal on the reverse: LWL
  • 84.5 x 110 cm.

Condition

The paint surface has been transferred from panel to canvas, and consequently is rather flattened. The paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish discoloured. There are visible retouchings scattered throughout the figures' flesh tones, most notably in Venus' chest. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these, and confirms what appear to be old tears in her chest, 2 horizontal measuring approx. 30 and 10 cm. long, and one diagonal approx. 15 cm. A horizontal fine line is also revealed running across her face, as well as retouchings throughout the upper left corner (in the sky) and further scattered spots throughout. None of these distract from the legibility of the image, which appears ready to hang.
