the Porter marble top above two cupboard doors enclosing four removable baize-lined trays

Condition

In overall reasonable conserved condition. The marble top is probably associated and has typical minor old marks and scratches consistent with age and use. There is a repaired break to right hand corner. Rosewood is well figured and boldly carved to uprights. Polished surface to left side with small area of discolouration, likely from exposure to moisture, and would benefit from attention. Red baize lining to trays is tired and lifting and would benefit from replacing. Doors with indentations to interior from contact with trays. Lock re-positioned but possibly original. Moulding to one escutcheon with losses. 'Boulle' inlay to doors generally in good condition with lifting to upper section of banding of one panel and minor lifting to small areas of other which would benefit from attention according to taste. Upper hinge to right hand door with small split and loss to veneer. Left foot with loss to scrolled ear. Generally veneers and carved elements with minor old marks, scratches and chips entirely consistent with age and use. A handsome piece of excellent quality.

Catalogue Note

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Woodbridge, 2008, Vol. II, p. 17, pl. 544.

This side cabinet shares many of the stylistic characteristics of Gillows’ output in the 1820s. In particular, the boldly scrolled corners are comparable with the carving of the celebrated suite of furniture supplied by Gillows to William, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam for the famous Whistlejacket Room at Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire (Stuart, op. cit., Vol. II, p. 225, pl. 215). Further, a pair of pier tables supplied to Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, relate closely and are also attributed to Gillows (Stuart, op. cit., Vol. II, p. 359, pl. E24). For a very similar brass inlaid cabinet, see that sold Sotheby’s London, 12 May 2015, lot 81 (£37,500) (Stuart, op. cit., Vol. I, p. 17, pl. 544).
