Description

  • length 51 5/8 in.
  • 131 cm
each designed with a sloping hull extending aft to an angled, scrolled stern, the exterior sides of the hull decorated with phoenixes and lotus meander on a deep blue ground, centered by a large shou-medallion paddle wheel, the deck supporting two upper tiers surmounted by small peak-roofed structures, one with gilt metal friezes depicting writhing dragons pursuing the ‘flaming pearl,’ the second and lower tiers with arch-form galleries with lotus and ruyi motif enamel decoration, each deck surface with a continuous floral design, all raised on a waisted wave and lotus lappet-carved wood base. 4 pieces.

Condition

Both ships: in overall good, stable condition with repairs and re-soldering scattered throughout including to gilt metal railings and roofs. Minor losses and wear to the enamels and minor dents and areas of compression. Minor patches of oxidation to the gilt metal. There appear to be lost screws on the roofs. Possible lost implement to the bow of each ship where there is a small, circular aperture.
