The gilt wood skull: the back of the skull carved separately with a visible joint. There are many scratches, chips and losses to the gilding. A few splits are visible in some places consistent with the material. The wooden base with minor splits consistent with the material.
The painted skull: with surface dirt and wear to the polychromy consistent with age and handling. There are a few losses to the polychromy to the high points, chips along the edges. There are a few dents along the edges of the wooden base. The polychromy appears to have been refreshed.
The memento mori: with surface dirt and chips along the edges and to the high points. There are a few losses to the polychromy in several places and losses to the edges of the book, notably on both front lower corners. The two crossed bones nailed to the book are loose. The polychromy may have been retouched in some places.
