Description

  • Panel : 36.5 x 26.5 cm, 14 1/3 x 10 1/3 in. ; H. (base of the Crucifix) 37.5 cm, 14 3/4 in. ; H. (ossuary) 16.5 cm, 6 1/2 in.
the panel figuring a skeleton holding a banner ; the base of a Crucifix figuring a tree taking root on a skull on two shins surrounded by a snake ; the ogive-shaped ossuary comprising nine skulls in three alcoves

Condition

The base of Crucifix: there are a few splits visible in several places consistent with the material. A larger vertical split has been filled with a thin piece of wood above the proper right eye socket of the skull. The lower jaw is missing and the upper jaw with many losses. Minor wood worming is visible in several places. One root at the base of the cross has been broken and reattached with two joints slightly visible. The two crossed bones slightly loose attached to the underside of the skull with a wooden peg, may be a later replacement. The panel: A few splits are visible in several places consistent with the material. The back of the panel is closed and not visible. Minor wood worming in several places, notably to the upper border of the frame. A loss is visible to the lower left of the bone in the upper left of the panel. The background of the panel with two fillings to both sides. The surface appears to have been varnished in a darker colour, and refreshed. The wooden ossuary: With fairly consistent surface dirt and wear to the polychromy. There are a few small losses to the polychromy, notably along the edges of the wooden frame. A hole is visible to the back, where the ossuary was hooked. A few minor scratches are visible on the surface of the glass.
