Condition
The panel is sound. There is no evidence of retouching under UV light. There are some minor scuffs along the extreme edges (not visible when framed). There are a few small pigment losses in the sky, predominately towards the centre of the upper edge. There is a tiny dent to the right of the tower. This work is in overall very good condition.

Catalogue Note
Durant l’été 1887, Paul Signac s’installe à Collioure, dans les Pyrénées-Orientales. Il y peint plusieurs esquisses, dont la présente qui lui inspireront quatre toiles majeures, chefs d’œuvre néo-impressionnistes de la série des Opus, qui seront exposées au Salon des XX à Bruxelles l’année suivante. Cette composition très aboutie prépare le fameux Collioure. Le Clocher (Opus 164) présentement dans les collections du Musée Kröller-Muller à Otterlo. C’est un fascinant aperçu de la technique de Signac. L’artiste y prépare son sujet en peignant sur le motif, il divise sans pointiller et structure les éléments qui serviront au travail d’atelier et à l’élaboration de l’œuvre définitive. Ces études sont excessivement rares et sont un témoignage de cette technique de travail préparatoire sur petits panneaux de bois qu’il développa avec son ami Georges Seurat.
