John Quincy wrote in his 1749 work PharmacopÅ“ia officinalis & extemporanea: or, a Compleat English Dispensatory of 'Pilulae de Terra Japonica', or 'Japan Pills', that "...These greatly corrugate and draw up relaxed fibres of the stomach and bowels; and therefore will not only be of services in fluxes, but also assist in digestion. They may be taken two or three times a day, four or five in a dose."
