Description
- rhinoceros horn
- 13.3 cm, 5 1/4 in.
modelled after the archaic ewer yi, set with a clambering chilong handle, the mid-section carved with an 'earth' diaper band, encircled by a key-fret band at the rim, the densely grained horn patinated to a rich brown colour
Condition
The cup is in overall good condition. There is a small restoration at the rim to the front right of the spout (approx. 1.8 x 0.2cm). There are a few minute occasional nicks to the edges of the rim and chilong-shaped handle, some light typical pitting in areas. There is also a slight indentation to the rear of the foot rim, possibly an old polished chip. Overall the carving is very good and with a fine aged patina.
