Catalogue Note

Henri Hoppenot (1891-1977) used to be a famous French diplomat. In 1951, he was Honorary Member of the Museum of Fine Arts Bern. From 1952 to 1955, he was Permanent Representative of France to the UN Security Council. From 1955 to 1956, he was Commissioner-General of France in Indochina (the last person to hold this post). From 1956 to 1964, he was Member of the French Council of State.
He produced with his wife Hélène the book Extrême-Orient (Ides et Calendes, 1951) with photos taken in the Far East.
He gathered an important collection of Asian Art and Modern Art that was sold in Paris the 9th April 1991 by Binoche et Godeau after his death. Our portrait is very similar to the painting sold in Drouot by Ader Norman, the 10th of October 2018, lot 90, with the same provenance : "Collection Henri Hoppenot", coming from the same sale in Paris, the 9th April 1991.
