Condition

Very good condition overall. Proper left leg is broken and repaired with a nail. Front of both feet broken and glued. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Fine, glossy dark patina.

Catalogue Note

Insignes de mérite, les cuillers wa ke mia symbolisent chez les Dan la générosité et les talents de la wunkirle – femme la plus hospitalière d’un village ou d’un quartier. Celles dont l’ample cuilleron, évoquant la fécondité de la matrice, se prolonge comme ici en un cou élancé s’achevant sur deux jambes fléchies, illustrent « la population arrivant à pied pour être nourrie par  [la] wunkirle. » (Neyt, Trésors de Côte d’Ivoire, 2014, p. 59). La pureté formelle de la silhouette anthropomorphe est rehaussée tant par les scarifications ornant au dos les mollets et le cuilleron, que par la profonde patine d’usage.
