The essentialist style of Piccolo Cavallo Uniforme indicates that Marini, towards the beginning of the 1950s shifted towards an abstract rendering of the equestrian theme. Just as Alberto Giacometti explores the expressive depiction of animals, Marini reduces the voluminous forms of the horse to its bare bones, using lines and forms elegantly and playfully twisted in perfect harmony. The artist stripped the work of the material around the figure of the horse, depicted with the legs firmly stuck to the base, expressively modelled to obtain a very fine and sinuous effect. The filiform figure of the horse contrasts with the heavy and hard material used, bronze. The dialogue between the elegance and the sinuosity of the form with the toughness of the medium intensifies the spiritual perception of the sculpture and encourages the viewer to meditate on the artwork.
While in the 1950s the historical/theoretical debate on abstraction in contrast to figuration influenced the artistic production of the time, Marini is inspired by Etruscan art. From the moment that every superficial element is eliminated, realism disappears, absorbed by the form that he will maintain from now onwards, just as the skeleton supports the skin.
