Alexis Poliakoff, Serge Poliakoff, Catalogue Raisonné, Volume V, 1966-1969, Paris, 2016, p. 81, no. 66-10, illustrated in colour
Between 1965 and 1967, Serge Poliakoff executed 67 mural compositions with a red lining, painted in tempera on prepared paper laid down on canvas. These artworks most likely echo back to the souvenir of the iconostases of the Russian churches Poliakoff attended during his childhood. They will be exhibited for the first time in 1966 at the Musée Saint-Gall, creating an environment in the contemporary sense of the word, meaning a place where the viewer can move and become sensitive to the mystical dimension of the work.
The colours are fairly accurate in the printed catalogue illustration although the overall tonality is deeper in the original work. Wears are located in each of the four corners and on the upper half of the left edge. This work is very good condition.
