Catalogue Note
The present work is the only study in watercolor Thomas Hart Benton created in preparation for his 1940 tempera on canvas The Hailstorm, now in the collection of the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. A deeply-felt depiction of the timeless struggle between man and nature, this work alludes to the impact of severe weather on farmers and families of the Southern Plains region during the Dust Bowl in the early 1930s.
