American Illustrators Gallery, New York Acquired by the present owner from the above, 2011
The present work is a study for the February 1961 cover image of Boys' Life magazine, the official monthly publication of the Boy Scouts of America. The final painting, for which this work is a study, was also illustrated on the organization's 1961 calendar.
The sheet is taped to the mat across the top edge and at the upper right and upper left edges. There are artist pinholes at extreme edges. There are visible horizontal creases at the upper right corner and the lower right corner. There is minor mat burn at upper right edge and some scattered spots of foxing particularly in the lower right corner. There appears to be an area of staining in background at upper left and a few other minor spots of staining throughout. The work retains glue remnants on the reverse from a prior mounting.
