The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes, Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is in very good state. The canvas is unlined on its original stretcher. The tacking edges have been reinforced. The paint layer is cleaned and varnished. When viewed under ultraviolet light, one can see small retouches around the branches of the tree immediately to the right of the steeple and on the upper right edge addressing some frame abrasion. The signature in the lower left is painted over another signature. Both of these signatures are original. The first signature is very thinly written, perhaps even written with a pen or pencil or inscribed into the paint layer. This is not an unduly unusual circumstance, and the whole area is original. The condition is very good, and the work should be hung as is.
