Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes, Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work has a thin old lining. The stretcher is original. The paint layer is clean and retouched. The condition is quite good in the water and foreground, with only a few retouches here and there. However, the sky has received many retouches which seem to address some staining and unevenness from interference of the canvas grain. Under ultraviolet light, one can particularly see a good deal of retouching in the lower and center sky, where the clouds are more complex. The exact reason for these retouches is unknown, and while removing them would give the opportunity to re-apply fewer retouches, there is clearly some issue that needed attention, which warrants caution. The condition seems to be fairly respectable overall, and the work could well be hung in its current state.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
