Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Devi Ormond, Associate Paintings Conservator at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The overall condition of the painting is excellent. The image is painted on a panel consisting of one board, the condition of which is excellent. The reverse of the panel is painted black and there are some scuff marks visible on the left and right edges, which may have been caused by the previous framing of the panel. Some minor dents can be found along the outer edges of the support. The painting has recently been conserved. Treatment involved consolidation of some of the glazes in the leaves, the removal of surface dirt and only minimal retouching has been carried out. The condition of the painting is extraordinary, especially taking into condition the 'lacquered' surface appearance of the black background. The background of these paintings by Lambdin are known to be sensitive to scratches and also often exhibit extensive crazing of the delicate surface. In this panel, only minor scratches, which are hardly visible, are located in the lower and right edges of the background. The paint layer is stable with drying cracks located only on the red rose in the center. Darkening of the yellow glazes can be seen in the adjacent yellow rose, this relates to the material used by the artist and is a common phenomenon found in the ageing of some 19th century yellow paints.
