Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes, Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work has been restored. The canvas is lined, it seems with a non-wax adhesive. The restoration is mostly quite good, with the exception of the upper left corner, where a triangular portion of the picture measuring 3 by 4 by 6 inches is missing and has been restored. The filling here is acceptable, but the color of the retouching is slightly blanched and needs to be corrected. There are a few other spots of retouching throughout the picture, but the only area of any concentration is in the snowy bank in the foreground and in the lower left corner. The signature and date are written in ink, and the first half of the signature seems to have been strengthened, if not added. It is recommended that the upper left corner be addressed, but it is not recommended that the picture be cleaned or otherwise restored. Aside from the upper left, the condition seems to be quite respectable.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
