Condition

There are two horizontal splits running through the entire width of the board, on the reverse. However, these are not visible on the front. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals areas of uneven fluorescence due to old residual varnish. Some small spots of retouching addressing paint loss are visible along the left edge. Otherwise, this work is in overall good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a gilt frame with a white inner slip.

Catalogue Note

Painted circa 1931. In 1911, Eberl moved to Paris which became central to his oeuvre. Eberl began his career drawing satirical caricatures in Munich but after moving to France was drawn to Paris’s bohemian neighbourhood, Montmartre, where he set out to capture the essence of the marginalised poor and this intriguing social environment. It was these paintings and Eberl’s sensual nudes which earnt him great recognition amongst his peers.
