Painted in 2012, the present work incorporates the conceptual and painterly principles of his earlier work. The Neo-Avant-Garde movement viewed waves as optical 'interferences' or organic abstract surfaces, a notion which is reflected in Sea where the 'trompe l’œil' tradition is referenced. With this romantic and impulsive vision of the sea’s waves, Pauer draws attention the painting’s contrasting two-dimensional picture plane and three-dimensionality, the relationship between representation and objecthood, and the absence and presence of the creator.
